Living a Quiet Life in a Noisy World
The Introvert's Way by Sophia Dembling is a guide for introverts, offering insights and advice on how to navigate the extroverted world while staying true to their quiet nature. It explores the strengths and potential of introversion, providing a refreshing perspective on what it means to be an introvert.
Life as an introvert can be tough at times. You might doubt yourself, wondering if there’s something wrong with you. Why is it that you can’t stand parties? Is it normal to like being alone so much?
And then, even if you accept that you’re an introvert, others might not. “You’re not really an introvert,” they say. “You’re capable of conversation! You have friends!” Well, of course. These things aren’t mutually exclusive.
There’s a lot of confusion about introversion – what it is exactly, and whether or not it’s better to be extroverted. Introverts often feel misunderstood or even judged for being who they are.
And it’s no wonder, given the society we live in. Parents worry about the child who prefers to play alone in their room or the bookworm teenager who’s happiest at home. In the workplace, people are made to feel guilty if they’re not “team players.”
In the US, extroversion is particularly valued. The noisy ones – politicians, public figures, and people posting on social media – get the most attention. Quiet thinkers are drowned out by the racket.
But quiet can be powerful too. The actor Marlon Brando once spoke about his character in The Godfather. It was a deliberate choice to give Don Corleone a calm, quiet voice – so quiet it was almost inaudible at times. When he speaks, others listen.
Now, as a Mafia boss, Don Corleone isn’t exactly the best role model. But in his quiet influence, there’s a lesson.
If you’re an introvert, it’s time to find your voice and be quietly assertive about who you are. Being an introvert is no worse than being an extrovert, just different. In the next section, we’ll look at some of these differences, and try to pin down what makes you you.
The Introvert’s Way (2012) is a guide to living well as an introvert in what feels like an extrovert’s world. Introverts should aim to accept themselves as they are, while using strategies to manage their energy and navigate tricky social situations.
It's highly addictive to get core insights on personally relevant topics without repetition or triviality. Added to that the apps ability to suggest kindred interests opens up a foundation of knowledge.
Great app. Good selection of book summaries you can read or listen to while commuting. Instead of scrolling through your social media news feed, this is a much better way to spend your spare time in my opinion.
Life changing. The concept of being able to grasp a book's main point in such a short time truly opens multiple opportunities to grow every area of your life at a faster rate.
Great app. Addicting. Perfect for wait times, morning coffee, evening before bed. Extremely well written, thorough, easy to use.
