Everything I Never Told You is a gripping novel that delves into the complexities of family dynamics, secrets, and the weight of unspoken truths. Set in 1970s Ohio, it explores themes of identity, race, and the impact of unfulfilled dreams.
In Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng, we dive into the life of the Lee family - a Chinese American mixed-race family living in 1970s Ohio. The novel opens with the death of the family’s middle child, Lydia Lee, and its immediate aftermath. Her death brings the lingering issues within the once tight-knit family to the forefront, unveiling the immense stress and pressure Lydia was under to fulfill her parents’ unmet dreams.
We learn that her mother, Marilyn, gave up her career dreams to become a dutiful housewife while her father, James, battled with lifelong feelings of alienation due to his Asian heritage. Together, they envisaged a life of popularity and academic success for Lydia, failing to listen to her true desires in the process.
Marilyn and James’ stories unfold through a series of flashbacks. We discover that Marilyn, originally aspiring to be a doctor, faced an uphill battle against gender norms. However, her unplanned pregnancy and marriage to James led her to forego her aspirations. James, on the other hand, always felt like an outsider due to being one of the few Asian students in his school and university. He married Marilyn partly because she saw him for who he is, not as an outcast.
The parents’ unfulfilled dreams became projections on Lydia. Marilyn pushed her towards a career in medicine, while James wanted her to be socially successful. They were both blind to the strain it put on Lydia and her struggle to please them, while also neglecting their two other children, Nath and Hannah.
We see that Nath, the oldest sibling, is on the brink of heading off to Harvard on a scholarship. He resents Lydia for being the center of their parents’ attention but also shows concern for her and the pressure she faces. The youngest, Hannah, is often forgotten and remains observant and quiet. Meanwhile, Lydia struggles to meet her parents’ expectations and is lost in their dreams, unable to articulate her feelings or dissatisfaction.
Lydia’s only friend, Jack, is also Nath’s rival. Jack and Lydia share an intense, complex relationship. Lydia sees him as an escape from her suffocating life, and their friendship eventually leads to her first sexual experience, which she perceives as a violation, further escalating her inner turmoil.
After Lydia's death, the family gradually uncovers the secrets she had been hiding - her failing grades, her sense of loneliness, and the incident with Jack. This revelation shows them the extent of their misunderstanding and miscommunication.
In the end, Everything I Never Told You is a haunting tale of how deeply our loved ones can influence us, and it serves as a reminder about the importance of understanding and communication within a family. While the loss of Lydia is tragic, it eventually leads the Lees on a path towards self-discovery, acceptance, and a reevaluation of their dreams and aspirations.
