Growth and Transformation

Gilbert also attends and despite their early rivalry, they finally become friends. It becomes apparent over time that Gilbert has feelings for Anne, but she remains oblivious to his affection.
Tragedy strikes when Matthew dies of a heart attack, leaving Anne and Marilla heartbroken. To support Marilla, who's now struggling alone, Anne gives up her dream to attend a prestigious college and stays at Green Gables to teach at a local school. Gilbert, who has always admired Anne, gives up his teaching position at Avonlea school so Anne can work closer to home, a sign of his deep love for her.
A New Chapter in Life
Anne and Marilla's life changes thoroughly when they decide to adopt twins, Davy and Dora, providing them a new sense of purpose. Anne also slowly comes to understand her true feelings for Gilbert, following an incident where Gilbert becomes seriously ill. This marks a new stage in Anne's life, as she starts to consider love and marriage.
