    Through the looking glass

    Most people believe that modern physics is something you can only understand if you’re a genius. But the truth is, anyone can understand the basics about even the most cutting-edge ideas. That’s because scientists rely on metaphors, or tricks of language that use an easily understood thing to illustrate a much more complex one. In science, metaphors become models, and after experimental observation, become scientific reality.

    For instance, scientists describe magnetism and electricity as fields, light with wave functions, and refer to the fabric of space-time. Mathematics uses symbols to describe physical relationships too precise for language alone — a different kind of metaphor, but a metaphor nonetheless. 

    So even the most complicated mathematics is grasping the unknown by relating it to the known. This works incredibly well for things here on earth. For instance, if a physicist knows a baseball's speed, angle, and weight, they can predict exactly where it will land in the field.

    However, in the real world, we’re mostly approximating, because there are so many forces at play. These are what physicists call the boundary conditions, or the known starting position and constraints for any equations they calculate.

    For most descriptions of the real world, equations let physics predict how objects and forces will interact well enough to harness steam and electricity, build skyscrapers, and launch scientific probes to explore the solar system. Where things get really tricky, and where metaphors start to fail, is when physics tries to describe the forces at the universal or quantum level. 

    That’s because our real-world equations only predict things accurately when the initial boundary conditions are known. But what are the boundary conditions of the entire universe? You’d have to be both outside the universe, and outside of time, to know what those are.

    And at the smallest, or quantum, level things get even stranger. Because no matter how hard physicists try to describe what they observe at the quantum level, subatomic particles seem to go out of their way to be weird. Like Alice in Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll, physicists trying to describe quantum phenomena discover that sometimes things are both down and up or both here and there at the same time.

    The coming chapters take us through a few ideas from current cosmology a bit like Alice through the looking glass, to kindle wonder at the strangeness of our universe.

    Chanda Prescod-Weinstein is Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy and core faculty in Women's and Gender Studies at the University of New Hampshire, where her research spans dark matter, neutron stars, and particles beyond the standard model. She received the 2021 American Physical Society Edward A. Bouchet Award for her contributions to particle cosmology, and in 2022 won an inaugural National Academies Schmidt Award for Excellence in Science Communication. Her debut book, The Disordered Cosmos, won the 2021 Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Science and Technology, the 2022 Phi Beta Kappa Award in Science, and a 2022 PEN Oakland Josephine Miles Literary Award. She writes a monthly column for New Scientist and contributes regularly to Physics World.
