As the battle between good and evil intensifies, Clary discovers her unique ability to create new runes, a power that could change the course of the war. She also learns about the true nature of the Mortal Cup, a powerful artifact that can create new Shadowhunters. Clary realizes that her mother, Jocelyn, had hidden the Cup inside her own body to keep it away from Valentine.
With the help of her friends, Clary retrieves the Cup and uses it to create new Shadowhunters, strengthening their forces. However, Valentine manages to capture Jace and uses him as a pawn to force Clary to give him the Cup. In a daring rescue mission, Clary and her friends storm Valentine's fortress to save Jace and stop Valentine's destructive plans.
