My Life and Rugby by Eddie Jones is a captivating memoir that delves into the world of rugby. Jones shares his personal journey and coaching philosophy, offering valuable insights into the game.
My life in rugby began in a small town in Tasmania, Australia. My father, who was a school principal, introduced me to the game at a young age. I played rugby as a hobby and loved it so much that I decided to pursue it professionally. I moved to Sydney to study at the University of Sydney and played for Randwick, one of the most successful rugby clubs in Australia. It was here that I began to understand the essence of teamwork and the importance of discipline in the game.
After my graduation, I joined the New South Wales Rugby Union as a development officer. This was my first brush with coaching and I quickly realized that my true calling was not in playing the game, but in shaping the players and teams that played it. I went on to coach the Australian Schoolboys and the Australian Under-21s, where I honed my coaching skills and developed my own unique coaching philosophy.
My first major international coaching role was with the Australian national team, the Wallabies. I was with them during the 2003 Rugby World Cup, where we reached the final but lost to England. Despite the loss, it was a valuable experience that taught me the importance of resilience and adaptability in the face of defeat.
After the World Cup, I coached the Queensland Reds and then moved to Japan to coach the Suntory Sungoliath. My time in Japan was transformative, both personally and professionally. I immersed myself in the Japanese culture and adapted my coaching style to suit the needs of the team. This culminated in one of the greatest upsets in rugby history, when Japan defeated South Africa in the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
In 2015, I was appointed as the head coach of the England national rugby team. It was a challenging time for the team, having just been eliminated from the Rugby World Cup in the group stages. I immediately set to work, implementing my coaching philosophy and making significant changes to the team's strategy and culture.
My first year with England was a resounding success. We won the Grand Slam in the Six Nations Championship and completed a 3-0 series whitewash of Australia in their own backyard. However, we faced setbacks in the following years, including a fifth-place finish in the Six Nations and a series defeat against South Africa. These challenges tested my coaching abilities and leadership skills, and I had to adapt and evolve to steer the team back to success.
In my book, My Life and Rugby, I share the lessons I've learned throughout my coaching career. I discuss the importance of creating a winning culture, the value of resilience in the face of adversity, and the need for continuous improvement. I also talk about the evolving nature of rugby and the changes I've witnessed in the game over the years.
As I reflect on my journey, I am proud of the progress we've made with the England team. We've climbed the world rankings, developed a strong team culture, and achieved significant victories. However, I also acknowledge that the journey is ongoing, and there is always room for improvement. I remain committed to the future of English rugby and continue to work towards further success and growth for the team.
