Empress Dowager Cixi by Jung Chang is a captivating biography that delves into the life of one of the most powerful and controversial women in Chinese history. It offers a revealing look at Cixi's rise to power and her impact on the fate of China.
In Empress Dowager Cixi by Jung Chang, we are taken into the life of the Empress Dowager Cixi, a woman who ruled China for nearly half a century. Born into a Manchu family, Cixi entered the Forbidden City as a concubine to the Xianfeng Emperor at the age of sixteen. Her life took a dramatic turn when she was selected to be one of the emperor's consorts. When the emperor died, Cixi seized power by outmaneuvering the male-dominated court, a feat considered impossible for a woman at the time.
Despite being confined to the harem, Cixi managed to wield power behind the scenes, first as a regent for her son, and later for her nephew. She was a shrewd politician, who navigated through court intrigues, power struggles, and foreign invasions to maintain her position at the top. Chang presents Cixi as a complex figure, a mix of traditional and modern, ruthless and compassionate, who was determined to protect her power and her country.
During her time in power, Cixi implemented numerous reforms to modernize China. She initiated educational reforms, established modern schools, and encouraged the education of women. She also supported the construction of railroads, telegraphs, and factories, and even sent young men abroad to study modern technology and governance. However, her efforts were often overshadowed by the resistance from conservative officials who feared losing their power and influence.
One of her most significant reforms was the abolition of the ancient practice of foot-binding, a move that was met with fierce opposition from the conservative factions. Despite the backlash, Cixi remained resolute in her efforts to bring China into the modern era. She also played a key role in the construction of a new navy and modernization of the army, aiming to strengthen China's defense against foreign powers.
Throughout her rule, Cixi faced numerous challenges, both domestic and foreign. She dealt with the Taiping Rebellion, a devastating civil war that claimed millions of lives, and the Boxer Rebellion, an anti-foreigner movement that resulted in the invasion of Beijing by an international force. Despite these crises, Cixi managed to maintain her grip on power and navigate China through turbulent times.
Chang also sheds light on Cixi's personal life, including her relationships with the emperor, her adopted son, and her close confidante, a eunuch named Li Lianying. Cixi's personal tragedies, including the untimely death of her son and the execution of her adopted son, added to the complexities of her reign.
In the latter part of her life, Cixi began to show signs of fatigue from her long rule. She started to withdraw from active governance, leaving the day-to-day affairs of the state to her advisors. Her health began to deteriorate, and she passed away in 1908. After her death, the Qing Dynasty soon collapsed, marking the end of thousands of years of imperial rule in China.
Despite her controversial legacy, Cixi is remembered as a powerful and influential figure in Chinese history. Her reign, marked by both progress and setbacks, played a crucial role in shaping modern China. In Empress Dowager Cixi, Jung Chang offers a nuanced portrayal of this enigmatic woman, challenging traditional narratives and shedding light on the complexities of her rule.
