Her life took a dramatic turn when she was selected to be one of the emperor's consorts. When the emperor died, Cixi seized power by outmaneuvering the male-dominated court, a feat considered impossible for a woman at the time.
Despite being confined to the harem, Cixi managed to wield power behind the scenes, first as a regent for her son, and later for her nephew. She dealt with the Taiping Rebellion, a devastating civil war that claimed millions of lives, and the Boxer Rebellion, an anti-foreigner movement that resulted in the invasion of Beijing by an international force. Despite these crises, Cixi managed to maintain her grip on power and navigate China through turbulent times.
