Dividing Sword by Katrina D Hamel is a historical fiction novel set in ancient Rome. It follows the story of a young gladiator who must navigate the treacherous world of the Colosseum while uncovering a dangerous conspiracy.
In Dividing Sword by Katrina D Hamel, we are transported to the ancient world of first-century Palestine, where the life of Jesus of Nazareth is unfolding. We follow the intertwined lives of Beth, a young woman who is drawn to Jesus' message of love and compassion, and Reuben, a Pharisee disciple who is increasingly wary of Jesus' teachings.
Beth, a woman who has suffered greatly in her life, is drawn to Jesus' message of hope and healing. She is captivated by his miracles and teachings and decides to follow him, leaving behind her husband, Peter, a fisherman who has also become one of Jesus' disciples. As she travels with Jesus, she is struck by his radical message of love and forgiveness, which challenges the rigid societal norms of the time.
On the other hand, Reuben, a Pharisee, initially follows Jesus out of curiosity and a desire to understand his teachings. However, as he spends more time with Jesus, he becomes increasingly conflicted. While he admires Jesus' charisma and ability to attract followers, he is deeply troubled by Jesus' apparent disregard for the Jewish laws and traditions that Reuben holds dear.
As the story progresses, we witness the growing tension between Beth and Peter, who is struggling with his own feelings of betrayal and abandonment. Despite Peter's initial enthusiasm for following Jesus, he finds himself increasingly at odds with the radical path Jesus is taking. This creates a rift between him and Beth, who is steadfast in her belief in Jesus' message.
Similarly, Reuben's conflict comes to a head when he witnesses Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem, which is seen as a direct challenge to the authority of the Jewish leaders. This event further deepens the divide between Reuben and his fellow Pharisees, who see Jesus as a dangerous revolutionary leading the people astray.
As Jesus' fate draws near, the emotional and ideological conflicts of our characters come to a head. Peter, consumed by guilt and fear, denies his association with Jesus three times, just as Jesus had predicted. Beth, on the other hand, stands by Jesus even as he is arrested and sentenced to death, demonstrating her unwavering faith in his teachings.
Reuben, torn between his loyalty to the Jewish law and his growing respect for Jesus, finds himself in a position to save Jesus from execution. In a moment of intense internal struggle, he ultimately chooses to uphold the law and betrays Jesus to the authorities, leading to his crucifixion.
In the aftermath of Jesus' death, our characters are left to grapple with the consequences of their choices. Peter, devastated by his betrayal, is filled with remorse but finds redemption in Jesus' forgiveness and his eventual role as a key figure in the early Christian movement.
Beth, heartbroken by Jesus' death, is initially filled with despair. However, she finds solace in Jesus' message of love and resurrection, and becomes one of the first witnesses to his resurrection, strengthening her faith and resolve further.
Reuben, burdened by guilt and regret, struggles to come to terms with his betrayal. His encounter with the risen Jesus leads to a profound transformation, and he becomes a fervent follower of Jesus' teachings, dedicating his life to spreading the message of love and forgiveness.
In Dividing Sword, Katrina D Hamel masterfully weaves a compelling narrative that explores the complex interplay of faith, loyalty, and betrayal. Through the journeys of Beth, Peter, and Reuben, we witness the profound impact of Jesus' life and teachings on those around him, and the transformative power of forgiveness and redemption.
