Understanding worry starts by spotting what fuels it
It’s bedtime, and your child is suddenly full of questions. What if something bad happens at night? What if school goes wrong tomorrow? What if you leave before they wake up? You answer, they settle for a moment, then the questions return.
When this happens, it’s easy to think you just haven’t found the right reassurance yet. But, more often than not, what your child needs isn’t another answer; they want a clearer understanding of how their worry is showing up and what is keeping it alive.
When you understand the real motive behind their questions, the first helpful shift is to stop treating each question like a separate problem to solve. Anxiety tends to trap children in a search for certainty, and reassurance may calm them briefly without changing the pattern underneath. That’s why the most useful early move is to step back and notice how worry is operating, instead of rushing to answer it away.
And worry does not always sound like fear. Some children go quiet or clingy, but others will complain of stomachaches, get restless, pick at their nails, or suddenly avoid something they wanted earlier.
There is a reason logic seems to disappear in these moments despite your constant reassurance. When the brain’s alarm system switches on, the body moves into fight, flight, or freeze, and the part of the brain that handles judgment and self-control becomes harder to access. Until a child feels safer, reasoning rarely gets very far.
With all this in mind, why not try a quick detective check tonight. Start with what’s been happening around your child, including the media they’re consuming and the emotional temperature at home. Then watch for patterns over the next few days, for example, when does worry peak, and which situations reliably trigger it? If anxiety is repeatedly disrupting sleep, school, or friendships, involve a doctor or therapist to rule out medical causes and get support early.
Once you can see the pattern, the next step is the SAFER method, that’s S-A-F-E-R. This stands for Set the Tone, Allow Feelings to Guide Behaviors, Form Identity, Engage Like a Pro and Role Model.
In the next sections, we’ll go through each of these one by one, starting with the first – Set the Tone.
