Free yourself from the myth of time management

Time. Think about your relationship with it for a moment. It moves through your most productive days and your worst ones with complete indifference – it simply doesn’t care. Yet a whole industry – books, seminars, apps, keynote speakers charging tens of thousands of dollars – has been built on the premise that you can manage it. That premise has always been shaky, to say the least. After all, you can no more manage time than you can manage the weather.

So why does this matter? Because believing the myth costs you. When you accept that time management is exactly that – a myth – you stop spending energy on a battle you were never going to win. The mindset that actually helps is called radical acceptance, and the idea behind it is simple: some degree of pain is built into life. What turns that pain into suffering is the energy spent resisting it. Applied to time, this means accepting that your days will never be fully under your control – and discovering that once you stop fighting that fact, something genuinely useful happens. The mental energy that was going into the battle becomes available for things you can actually influence.

From there, a few practical steps can help relieve the immediate pressure. Start with time decluttering. Go through your calendar and ask yourself honestly: which upcoming commitments still deserve to be there? Clearing even two or three opens up real breathing room.

Next, cut down the number of channels people can use to reach you. Email, workplace messaging, social media – every one of them is a claim on your attention. Stepping back from even one gives you more control over where your focus goes.

The third move is more internal. Many people with time anxiety carry a fixed story about themselves – that this is just how they are, and always will be. Replacing that with something more open – for example, “I’m still working this out,” or “I’m making progress” – matters more than it might seem. The way you talk to yourself about time shapes how you engage with it.

Understanding why you think about time the way you do is the next piece of the puzzle – and that’s where things get interesting.
