More than a dirty secret
Let’s talk about something nobody wants to talk about. And that’s exactly the problem. Let’s talk about poop.
Dr. Trisha Pasricha is a gastroenterologist – someone who’s dedicated their career to the gut – and even in her own clinic, patients struggle to say the word “poop” out loud. They circle around it, whisper, go red in the face. And while that’s understandable, it has real consequences. When we can’t name something plainly, myths rush in to fill the void. And when it comes to digestive health, those myths are doing serious damage.
Take the biggest big myth of all: that a healthy person poops once a day. This notion has been around since at least the 1800s, and by the early twentieth century, Americans were spending enormous sums annually on laxatives just to hit that arbitrary daily target. But the science tells a completely different story. Gastroenterologists consider a very wide window – multiple times daily at one end, a few times per week at the other – to be perfectly normal. The goal isn’t frequency but comfort and consistency.
So, what actually makes a good bowel movement? It comes down to three things. First, your gut needs enough muscular force to move things along. Second, your stool needs to be soft enough to travel smoothly. Fiber, not just water, is the key ingredient here. Third, and crucially, the muscles at the exit – your pelvic floor muscles – need to relax at just the right moment. That last part trips up far more people than you’d expect.
Here’s where it gets truly fascinating. A 2023 study tested people whose pelvic floor dysfunction left them completely unable to push out even a small internal test object – a proxy for real-world constipation. Researchers simply had them tilt their knees upward, past hip level, while seated on the toilet. One in six people were suddenly able to do something their bodies had resisted entirely before. No drugs. No procedures. Just a footstool.
The broader point is that most of us are working against our own biology without realizing it. But once you understand how your gut actually functions, small, practical changes can make a surprisingly dramatic difference.
