The hidden shadow of success

There’s one thing that entrepreneurs tend to leave out when talking about success: for many people, it’s a double-edged sword. When your achievements suddenly put you in the spotlight, or you get a new promotion that finds you in a new, elite circle, it can trigger an unsettling feeling that you somehow don’t deserve it. You find a persistent, internal voice that says a mistake has been made – you don’t belong here.

Even after years of accomplishments, these doubts can linger, waiting for the other shoe to drop – for some failure to emerge and prove that you don’t really know what you’re doing. After all, aren’t you just making it all up as you go along?

This feeling is known as impostor syndrome, and it’s something the author Kris Kelso is intimately familiar with. When he began his career, it was the early days of web design and he found himself tasked with building a company website despite having no prior experience. So he taught himself the basics by going to the library. After reading an HTML manual front-to-back a few times, he built his first website entirely from scratch. Little did he know, but that project would lead to a career in software development, followed by leadership positions, and then the launch of his own consulting business.

The voice of the Imposter kicked in not long after that first website, when he was suddenly being called an “expert.” As he saw it, he did something anyone with a library card could have done. Later, when he started his own consulting business, and spent years successfully growing it, he still couldn’t silence the voice in his head. Surely, someone smarter than him would call out his success as being nothing more than luck and happenstance.

Some relief came when he first learned about imposter syndrome, and that this pattern of thinking had a clinical name. It was like the old G.I. Joe saying: Knowing is half the battle. Realizing that psychologists had studied it – and that millions of capable people wrestle with the same thoughts – took away some of its power. Now he saw it for what it was: a common mental habit that often appears precisely when people are growing and reaching new territory in their lives.

Research shows that imposter syndrome is widespread. But it’s worth noting that entrepreneurs often experience these feelings intensely because uncertainty is baked into their job description. Every new business begins with untested ideas and educated guesses. Founders are generally called upon to tamp down any doubts they might have in order to present their most confident and assured face. This can naturally lead to feeling like a phony or an imposter.

So the first step is understanding. Simply knowing that successful people everywhere share these inner voices and feelings can change your relationship with self-doubt. In the next section, we’ll look at some more examples of how this cycle can persist and manifest itself.

When I saw Blinkist had produced an infographic style Blink for the Rich Dad, Poor Dad book, it was a good reminder of the concepts I loved.

Great app. Good selection of book summaries you can read or listen to while commuting. Instead of scrolling through your social media news feed, this is a much better way to spend your spare time in my opinion.
