Procrastination is a solution, just not a good one
Ask a hundred thousand people why they procrastinate and you’ll get a hundred thousand different answers. But when you look closely, five themes keep coming up: the task feels too difficult, there isn’t enough time, procrastination worked before so why change, the fear of falling short, and a sense that you simply shouldn’t have to do it at all.
Those are all valid reasons. But none of them is the actual one.
It might sound counterintuitive, but we procrastinate because it works, at least for a while. In the moment, it really feels better than facing whatever we’re avoiding – it saves us from discomfort, from judgment, from potential failure.
Finding something better is harder than it sounds, because we’re up against more than our own habits. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings once said the company’s biggest competitor isn’t other streaming services – it’s sleep. Things like social media, infinite scrolling, and binge-worthy TV are all engineered to hand you a more compelling alternative to doing the thing you actually want to do. If you’ve spent years feeling like you just can’t get it together, that context matters.
On top of that, most people who aren’t yet leading a remarkable life are blocked by one of seven reasons: they don’t know it’s possible, someone told them they weren’t capable of it, it feels too complicated, they think remarkable is a limited resource, they’re worried it’ll cost them their friendships, they’re afraid of criticism, or they’ve set an invisible ceiling on how much success they’re allowed to have.
Any of those land? Most people check several boxes. The good news is that none of them are permanent. Remarkable isn’t a distant destination; it’s available the moment your actions start matching your intentions, when there’s no gap between who you are right now and who you want to be for the rest of your life.
The four permissions – to dream, plan, do, and review – are the system that closes that gap. Each one addresses a different place where procrastination tends to take hold. Let’s start at the beginning, with dreaming.

When I saw Blinkist had produced an infographic style Blink for the Rich Dad, Poor Dad book, it was a good reminder of the concepts I loved.
