The Power of Strangers summary

Imagine you’re sitting in a busy subway. How are you passing the time? Well, like everyone else, you’re probably staring at your phone. 

It’s a familiar sight in cities across the West. Despite being surrounded by other people, we rarely interact with them. Even in situations where exchanging a word might seem natural – like, say, when you’re next to somebody admiring a painting in an art gallery – we stay silent.

Chimpanzees and bonobos are similar in appearance. But these apes have very different personalities. Chimps are so aggressive toward unfamiliar members of their own species that they often kill them. In other words, they’re xenophobic.

By contrast, bonobos are the direct opposite. They’ll go out of their way to interact with outsiders. Experiments have shown that they’d actually rather communicate with strangers than with apes they already know. Bonobos are xenophilic.

The single biggest factor in people’s happiness and well-being is social relationships. Many studies have shown that people who have good relationships are healthier in mind and body. Sadly, those who don’t have strong connections with others are more likely to suffer from all sorts of ailments, including mental health problems and heart disease.

These studies have traditionally focused on close relationships within families or groups of friends. But what about relationships with strangers? What, if any, difference do they make?

Imagine you’re standing in front of a fruit stall at a street market. You’re just about to pay for a basket of strawberries. The seller takes your cash and is getting ready to hand you your change. Having learned that talking to strangers can boost your mood and make you feel more connected to your community, you decide to strike up a conversation.

But you struggle to find the right words. How do you even start? Where do you take the conversation? Luckily, there are tried-and-true recipes for social interaction. 

Let’s face it: when COVID-19 turned our lives into one never-ending Zoom call, it only accelerated trends that were already well established. Even before the pandemic, we were living a bigger and bigger portion of our lives online. We’d gotten accustomed to having our meals and groceries delivered at the swipe of a screen. Our real-life peers were dissolving into mere specters.

Predictably, this lifestyle has led to dangerous levels of loneliness, depression, and social alienation. If we carry on like this, a dystopian future awaits – one where we’re mostly alone and the people who take care of our needs are invisible. This disengagement will also lead to sinking ever deeper into cultural, social, and political silos.
