Reffkin is quick to point out that he didn't get where he is on his own. Growing up without a father, he spent much of his life looking for guidance. Over time, that search led him to build deep relationships with mentors – relationships that would shape both his career and his view of the world.

For Reffkin, Jordan embodied something he desperately needed to see: that a Black man could be powerful and respected across every field he entered. When Reffkin told him he was scared to leave Goldman Sachs to start Compass, Jordan told him simply: “Son, opportunity is never convenient.”

When the letter from Columbia University arrived, Reffkin sat down with his mother and they both cried. A C-average kid from Berkeley, whose own guidance counselor had told him not to waste the application fee, had gotten in. That moment – the letter in his hands, his mother beside him – was what dreaming big actually looks like when it works.

When Reffkin was DJing parties in high school, he learned an important lesson: the crowd was always right.

If the dance floor emptied, he changed the music. If a song got people moving, he played more like it. By paying attention to what was actually happening in front of him – and adjusting accordingly – he became the most in-demand DJ on the Bay Area private school circuit for two years straight.

During his White House Fellowship, Reffkin attended a dinner where he found himself sitting next to Ori Allon, a young Israeli technologist who had recently sold a search algorithm to Google. The two hit it off. They exchanged business cards, said their goodbyes, and went back to their lives.

For most people, that would have been the end of the story. But Reffkin followed up with a handwritten thank-you note. Then a holiday card. Then another the following year. He sent birthday messages, checked in from time to time, and stayed in touch without asking for anything in return.

Early in his career at McKinsey, Reffkin spent a lot of energy trying to become someone he wasn't. He admired a colleague who excelled at spreadsheets and financial modeling, so he tried to do the same. The harder he pushed, the more frustrated he became.

His performance review cut through it. His manager told him plainly that he was never going to be a great analyst, but that he had real strengths worth focusing on. The advice was simple: acknowledge your weaknesses, find people who cover them, and pour your energy into what you’re actually great at.
