What is body language?
What’s the need behind your baby’s cries? Is your friend hiding something behind her reassuring smile? Is someone watching you as you pull cash from the ATM after dark?
All day, every day, we receive information from nonverbal communication. But how does it work? When your date’s laughter rings as false, how do you know it’s forced? What about when you’re certain a child is fibbing? We all speak this silent language without ever studying it, and 8.5 billion unique people share so many of the same subconscious behaviors.
The reason is that human beings have always communicated far more through their bodies than through words. Our ancestors lived in a brutal world full of predators like saber-toothed tigers they couldn’t outrun or overpower. Their edge was a bigger brain with a gift for rapid, silent communication; the ability to point out danger, plan a hunt, or signal escape without making a sound.
That survival skill embedded itself in our oldest neural wiring. These ancient parts of the brain predate logic and spoken language, and they still govern much of our body language today. One key component, for example, is a structure in the brain called the cingulate gyrus, which converts emotion into physical expression. It’s what turns happiness into a smile and anxiety into hand-wringing.
Each part of the body turns out to have its own vocabulary. The hands are among the most expressive and honest parts of the body. The brain devotes huge attention to operating the fingers, which is why we can barely hold a conversation without gesturing. Confident people spread their fingers wider and let their thumbs rise, while stressed people tuck their thumbs away. The hands also reveal nervousness – like fingers stiffly interlaced and grinding slowly knuckle against knuckle.
Then come the feet – another very honest body part. While faces can fake a smile, feet rarely lie. If someone greets you warmly but their feet stay pointed away, they’re not really inviting you in. If two people talking keep their feet aimed at each other after you’ve joined their conversation, you’ve interrupted. And you can tell whether someone in a poker game has an excellent hand because they’ll start unconsciously bouncing their knee up and down, the vibrations leading their shirt to ripple.
When people start learning about body language, they frequently want to know how they can tell someone is lying. In fact, despite what online “experts” claim, no single gesture reliably reveals deception. The real reward of learning this language isn’t catching liars. It’s recognizing the common thread that ties every human being to our shared origins and using it to build deeper, more genuine connections.

Great app. Good selection of book summaries you can read or listen to while commuting. Instead of scrolling through your social media news feed, this is a much better way to spend your spare time in my opinion.
