Stressed out

You’d never start a long drive with the fuel gauge on empty or cover up the warning light with tape. Yet most of us do exactly that with our own bodies. We run on fumes, ignore our fatigue, and still expect ourselves to keep performing. Unlike a car, we can’t refuel in five minutes. But we can understand how our bodies spend and rebuild energy, and then work with that system instead of against it.

Start with stress, which has a worse reputation than it deserves. In its simplest sense, stress is any expenditure of energy. In short bursts, it’s exactly what our bodies are built for. A rustle in the woods triggers a fast, useful cascade: racing heart, quickened breath, muscles ready. Cortisol, often cast as a villain, is really an energy hormone that naturally rises in the morning to get us moving.

The trouble is that modern stress rarely arrives and leaves. Instead, it seeps in and stays. Deadlines, money worries, and unresolved conflict can keep the body humming with never-ending vigilance. Over time, that can mean more inflammation, worse sleep, shakier blood sugar, and declining energy and confidence.

Whether stress builds you or breaks you comes down to a simple ledger. Demands are on one side and resources on the other. Demands are anything that asks something of you, like caregiving, work pressure, or illness. Resources are what you bring to meet them, both internal – like sleep and fitness – and external, like your friends. When your resources meet or exceed your demands, stress can produce growth. But when demands consistently outrun resources, the body eventually starts conserving energy, suppressing repair, and breaking down.

This very equation is why recovery isn’t a reward for finishing the work. It’s what makes the work possible in the first place. Sleep, movement, hydration, connection, reflection, and even small boundaries like turning off work messages before bed help rebuild depleted resources. Try asking yourself these questions: Do the demands in my life currently exceed my resources? And if so, What resource could I add to restore balance?

What is Aligned about?

Aligned (2026) makes the case that recovery, not relentless effort, is what actually drives peak performance. It shows how syncing daily routines with your body’s circadian rhythms builds energy, resilience, and focus, translating biometric signals into practical habits and offering frameworks for emotional resilience and purpose. It argues that downtime is a competitive advantage rather than a luxury.

Who should read Aligned?

When I saw Blinkist had produced an infographic style Blink for the Rich Dad, Poor Dad book, it was a good reminder of the concepts I loved.

It's highly addictive to get core insights on personally relevant topics without repetition or triviality. Added to that the apps ability to suggest kindred interests opens up a foundation of knowledge.

Great app. Good selection of book summaries you can read or listen to while commuting. Instead of scrolling through your social media news feed, this is a much better way to spend your spare time in my opinion.
