How to be effective at your job
Every day brings a fresh wave of tasks, meetings, and expectations – and somewhere in the middle of all that, you might wonder whether any of it is really making an impact. Getting your bearings in a fast-shifting work environment starts with rethinking what “doing your job well” looks like.
Take the story of Edgar McGregor, a 24-year-old meteorologist. In January 2025, devastating fires tore through the Los Angeles area and destroyed thousands of buildings. Weeks before the first spark, McGregor spotted weather patterns that matched previous disasters. He went on Facebook and urged his neighbors to park their cars facing the street – a small move that could save precious seconds during an evacuation.
His straightforward advice saved countless lives. And when people called him a hero, he shrugged it off, saying he’d just done his job.
That reaction captures something important. True effectiveness doesn’t demand perfection or superhuman feats performed day after day. Instead, focus on steady, reliable baseline work – this will compound over the arc of your whole career. There’s a psychological payoff, too: the simple feeling of personal accomplishment acts as a shield against burnout and exhaustion.
So, how do you build that kind of consistency? The first step is to figure out what your job actually is. Most people operate with a skewed picture of their own responsibilities. So try this for starters: write down a quick description of your role. Then write down how your boss, your peers, and your customers would describe it. The gaps between those descriptions will jump off the page.
The problem with official job descriptions is that they’re usually stuffed with generic corporate language built for compensation bands – and offer zero practical guidance. By mapping out those different perspectives yourself, you start to see the hidden expectations dragging you down. That clarity opens the door to direct conversations with your manager about shedding tasks that have crept onto your plate through the curse of competence – the slow accumulation of extra work that lands on capable people just because they’re good at things.
Now that you’ve cleared away the fog around your role, you need a framework for executing it. Think of this framework as a two-story house with four rooms.
The ground floor holds your foundation. Let’s call this knowledge and methods. Knowledge is everything you need to understand in order to function, and methods are the systematic approaches you use to turn that information into real-world outcomes.
Upstairs, you’ll find the two rooms that accelerate your work: these are people and technology. Your ability to collaborate acts as a catalyst, and your command of technological tools acts as a turbo boost. You’ll naturally be stronger in some rooms than others – and knowing them gives you stability when a sudden restructuring or a new system shifts the ground beneath your feet.
In the next section, we’ll go into the two floors of the house in more detail.

Great app. Good selection of book summaries you can read or listen to while commuting. Instead of scrolling through your social media news feed, this is a much better way to spend your spare time in my opinion.
