Planning and knowing the purpose of your efforts

Some moments divide life into a clear before and after. For Craig Haba, that moment arrived after brain surgery. Haba had been spending years of his life with trigeminal neuralgia, a stabbing facial pain that is so depleting it’s earned the name “the suicide disease.” The pain consumed attention and mental bandwidth every day. But in the summer of 2024, Craig awoke in a hospital bed, greeted by an unfamiliar feeling: complete relief. When he brushed his teeth for the first time without searing pain, he couldn’t help but cry tears of pure joy. The absence of pain created more than gratitude. It released mental capacity that had been trapped by constant distraction, giving him renewed clarity, energy, and the ability to perform at new heights

That clarity quickly turned to action. Immediately, Craig focused on accomplishing things that truly mattered – including priorities that had been waiting for too long. He wanted to repair his strained relationship with his brother, and he knew it was the time to complete the Certified Financial Planner designation he had postponed for years. Success was no longer only about what he could achieve. The experience forced him to ask what all that success was actually for.

And then there was his son, Alex, who was finishing a successful college baseball career and beginning his professional career at J.P. Morgan. For Craig, the transition marked the end of another meaningful chapter: after eighteen years, his life as a baseball dad had come to a close. Many parents understand that bittersweet feeling. The days of raising children can feel long, but the years pass remarkably fast. A trip offered Craig and Alex an opportunity not simply to play a celebrated golf course, but to begin building a new kind of relationship as father and adult son. Their destination would be TPC Sawgrass, the legendary Florida course that hosts the Players Championship, and its infamous seventeenth-hole island green. With a little luck and persistence, Haba booked the round and several days with pro instructors at Sea Island so they could prepare. It was shaping up to be a memorable milestone built around learning, connection, and shared adventure

Which leads us to our first takeaway: the importance of planning. But the lesson is larger than Craig's wake-up call: none of us should wait for pain, loss, or another life-changing event to clarify what matters. Whether it's a family road trip, a round of golf, or a financial journey, progress begins by asking not simply, “How do I accumulate more?” but, “What is all this actually for?” Direction, preparation, and a long-term strategy help turn that answer into action.

Oftentimes the wisest play is the conservative one – much like laying up well short of a water hazard to create an easier approach, instead of gambling on a risky shot.

A lot of the lessons that follow will be about just that: planning ahead to provide security and realize long-term goals. These aren't lessons about windfalls, dramatic rewards, or short-term gains. Life rarely changes through one lucky break. More often, small, purposeful decisions stack upon one another until they change the direction of a life. In golf and personal finance, that preparation creates flexibility, confidence, and options –  the ability to make future decisions from a position of strength rather than uncertainty.
