The Monster in the Hollows is the third book in the Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson. It continues the story of the three Igiby siblings as they confront new dangers and uncover the truth about their world.
In The Monster in the Hollows by Andrew Peterson, we are introduced to the Green Hollows, a land of wild beauty and fierce warriors. Janner Wingfeather, his brother Kalmar and their sister Leeli, are the last of the Wingfeather family, heirs to the throne of the fallen kingdom of Anniera. They seek refuge in the Green Hollows, a place where their identity as Wingfeathers must remain a secret, for the people of the Hollows distrust all things Annieran.
As they settle into their new home, Janner, the eldest, takes on the role of protector for his siblings. He tries to keep them safe while hiding the fact that Kalmar has transformed into a fang, a terrifying creature that is a result of the Fangs of Dang's dark magic. This transformation has put them all in grave danger, for the Fangs would stop at nothing to capture the last remaining heir to the throne of Anniera.
Despite their best efforts to blend in, the Wingfeathers' secret is discovered by the local law enforcement, and they are forced to flee into the wilds of the Green Hollows. Their journey is fraught with peril, as they must evade the treacherous Fangs and the dangerous creatures that inhabit the forests. Along the way, they encounter a group of children who are living in the wild, led by the enigmatic Lord Ralon. They form an unlikely alliance, and Ralon takes them to his secret hideout, the Shining Isle, a place that is rumored to be impervious to the Fangs' magic.
However, the peace is short-lived. The Fangs discover the location of the Shining Isle, and in a brutal attack, they capture Kalmar, leaving the rest of the group devastated. Janner is determined to rescue his brother, and with the help of his friends, he sets out on a dangerous quest to infiltrate the Fangs' stronghold, the Blackwood, and rescue Kalmar.
The Blackwood is a place of unspeakable horror, and the group must use all their wits and courage to navigate its treacherous depths. Along the way, they uncover a shocking secret: the Fangs are not the monsters they appear to be. They were once humans, transformed by the dark powers of Gnag, a malevolent force that seeks to destroy all traces of Anniera.
In a heart-stopping climax, Janner and his friends manage to rescue Kalmar, but not without a terrible cost. The group is torn apart, and Janner is left to face the grim reality of their situation. The Fangs are closing in, and the only hope for their survival is to embrace their true identity as Wingfeathers and stand up against the forces of darkness.
As the story concludes, Janner and his friends return to the Green Hollows, determined to rally the people against the Fangs. They reveal Kalmar's true identity as a fang, and to their surprise, the people accept him, recognizing that he is still the same person they have always known. The revelation unites the people of the Hollows, and they stand together to face the imminent threat of the Fangs.
In The Monster in the Hollows, Andrew Peterson weaves a tale of courage, sacrifice, and the enduring power of family. The Wingfeathers, once forced to hide their true selves, now embrace their identity and stand together against the darkness, inspiring hope in the hearts of those around them.
