Dread Nation by Justina Ireland is a gripping historical fiction novel set in an alternate reality where the Civil War was interrupted by the rise of the undead. The story follows Jane, a fierce African American heroine, as she battles both zombies and the deep-seated racism of her time.
In Dread Nation by Justina Ireland, we are transported to a post-Civil War America that has been ravaged by the undead. The story begins in a combat school in Baltimore, where our protagonist, Jane McKeene, is being trained as an Attendant, a bodyguard for the wealthy. Miss Preston's School of Combat is the epitome of social stratification, where the black and indigenous students are forced to fight the undead while the white students are taught to be leaders.
As the plot unfolds, we learn that after the Battle of Gettysburg, the dead began to rise, causing the Civil War to be put on hold. The government passed the Native and Negro Education Act, forcing black and indigenous children into combat schools to protect white society. This act, in essence, created a new form of slavery, with the marginalized groups serving as protectors for the privileged.
Amidst this backdrop, a series of mysterious disappearances occur in Baltimore, and Jane, along with her friend Katherine, uncovers a sinister plot. They learn that the wealthy are using the undead for their own gain, and they are being held captive by their supposed protectors. In a daring escape, they flee the school and head to Summerland, a supposed safe haven for black people.
However, their journey is far from easy. They encounter hordes of undead, as well as the corrupt law enforcement who are hunting them down. They also come across the 'Feral Ones', a group of people who have chosen to live with the undead rather than be oppressed by the living. These encounters force Jane to question her beliefs and the society she once strived to protect.
As Jane and Katherine navigate this treacherous landscape, they also grapple with their own identities. Jane, who was raised in a white household, often struggles with her place in the world. She is neither fully accepted by the white society nor by her black peers. Katherine, on the other hand, is a biracial woman who presents as white. Their complex relationship serves as a reflection of the racial dynamics of their world.
As they reach Summerland, they realize that the supposed safe haven is just another illusion. The town is run by a group of white supremacists who have enslaved the black population. This revelation forces Jane and Katherine to confront the harsh realities of their society and to take a stand against the systemic oppression.
In the climactic ending, Jane and Katherine lead a rebellion against the oppressive regime of Summerland. They are joined by a diverse group of allies, including the Feral Ones and some disillusioned white citizens. In the midst of the chaos, Jane discovers her unique ability to control the undead, a power that she uses to turn the tide of the battle.
Despite their victory, the future remains uncertain. The story ends with Jane and Katherine leaving Summerland, determined to continue their fight against the societal norms that oppress them. Dread Nation is a powerful commentary on race, class, and power, set in a world that is both terrifyingly different and hauntingly familiar.
