As a result, the Church is continuously recruiting new members, offering them the promise of eternal life in exchange for their unwavering loyalty. Those who refuse to join or attempt to leave are brutally hunted down and killed by the Church's deadly enforcers, the Monks, who are half-human, half-machine killing machines.
The Anti-Hero, Avery Cates
Our protagonist, Avery Cates, is a low-level criminal living in this oppressive world. He doesn't believe in the Church's teachings, but he knows better than to openly oppose them. However, his life takes a dramatic turn when he is hired by the authorities to assassinate The Pope, offering him a chance to escape his bleak existence.
Cates is a complex and flawed character. He is not a hero in the traditional sense but rather a survivalist, doing whatever it takes to stay alive in this unforgiving world. Despite his initial reluctance, Cates accepts the job, setting off a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the Church and its deadly Monks.
