Given a name and a legacy

Ketanji Brown Jackson’s childhood memories are filled with moments that reflect the powerful influence her family had on her dreams and aspirations. One of the most vivid memories is from when she was just four years old, sitting at the kitchen table across from her father. Both immersed in their own work, her father, a former high school history teacher, was studying to be a lawyer and was deep in his law books, while young Ketanji practiced her letters and created drawings. Even at such a tender age, she was inspired to emulate her parents’ focus and purpose, laying the groundwork for her future ambitions.

Ketanji's parents, Johnny and Ellery Brown, were principled, hardworking individuals who instilled in her the values of dedication and pride in her Black heritage. Her mother was the family’s primary breadwinner during her father’s law school years, embodying both warmth and strength as a role model for Ketanji. In their modest apartment near the University of Miami campus, Ketanji’s dream of pursuing a career in law began to take shape, influenced by the sacrifices her parents made for a better life.

The backdrop of Ketanji’s upbringing included the racial segregation and legal barriers her parents faced in Florida during the 1950s and ’60s. The laws of the time dictated where Black individuals could live, work, and dine, severely limiting their opportunities. These systemic obstacles, stemming from the legacy of the Black Codes and Jim Crow laws, shaped her family’s experiences. Her maternal grandparents, Horace and Euzera Ross, migrated to Miami from rural Georgia in search of better prospects, aiming to provide their children with opportunities for higher education despite the prevailing segregation in their new home.

Johnny Brown, Ketanji’s father, had a tougher start in life compared to her mother. Born in Fitzgerald, Georgia, he was the youngest of five siblings and faced significant challenges, including his parents’ divorce when he was just a toddler. His mother, Queenie Anderson, raised him and his siblings alone, eventually relocating to Miami's Liberty City for better opportunities. It was in Miami that Johnny met Ellery, marking the beginning of a love story that would shape their family’s future. Their commitment to education and civil rights remained steadfast, even as they navigated the financial struggles of their early years. When Ketanji was born in 1970, her aunt Carolynn gave her the unique name “Ketanji Onyika,” which means “Lovely One,” further enriching her sense of identity and pride as she grew up.
