In Goddess of Spring by P.C. Cast, we meet Lina, a modern woman who is struggling to make her bakery business a success. One day, she stumbles upon an ancient Italian cookbook that contains a spell to summon a goddess. Desperate to save her failing business, Lina decides to try the spell and ends up summoning Demeter, the goddess of the harvest.
Demeter offers Lina a deal: she will help Lina's bakery thrive, but in return, Lina must take the place of Persephone, Demeter's daughter, in the Underworld. Lina, intrigued by the offer, agrees to the exchange, and soon finds herself in the Underworld, inhabiting the body of Persephone.
Life in the Underworld
As Lina adjusts to her new life in the Underworld, she discovers that Hades, the god of the Underworld, is not the cruel and heartless figure she had imagined. Instead, she finds him to be a lonely and misunderstood ruler, burdened by his responsibilities. Lina, now Persephone, begins to develop feelings for Hades, and he, in turn, is drawn to her.
Meanwhile, back on Earth, the real Persephone is struggling to adapt to the mortal world. She finds herself in Lina's body, trying to understand the complexities of human life. She also discovers that Lina's bakery is thriving, thanks to the influence of the goddess Demeter.
The Power of Love
As Lina, now Persephone, and Hades spend more time together, their initial animosity turns into a deep and passionate love. However, their happiness is short-lived as Demeter, furious at the turn of events, decides to punish Hades by causing a never-ending winter in the mortal world. Lina, realizing the consequences of her actions, decides to return to the mortal world to set things right.
Back on Earth, Lina, now herself again, confronts Demeter and convinces her to end the winter. She also helps Persephone, who is still in her body, to adjust to life as a mortal. In the Underworld, Hades, realizing the depth of his feelings for Lina, decides to follow her to the mortal world.
A Happy Ending
In the end, Hades arrives in the mortal world, and he and Lina are reunited. They decide to stay together, and Hades promises to visit the mortal world more often. Persephone, now comfortable in her new life, decides to stay on Earth as well, leaving the Underworld to her mother.
