    Today’s search engine landscape

Imagine a world where knowledge is locked away in dusty tomes, accessible only to a few. Now consider our world today – where the vast expanse of human knowledge is at our fingertips, just a search query away. This is the power of modern search engines. Google dominates the search engine landscape, commanding over 90 percent of the global market share, although regional players like Baidu in China and Yandex in Russia maintain significant presences in their respective markets.

Regardless of platform, user search behavior is remarkably consistent. Most queries consist of just one to three words, with users often starting with very general queries and refining their searches as they gather information. A typical search session might involve multiple queries over time before the user takes a final action. Someone looking to buy a camera might start with "digital cameras," move to "mirrorless cameras," and end up searching for specific models before making a purchase.

Search queries fall into a few distinct categories. Navigational queries are about finding specific websites that the user already knows. Informational queries seek knowledge on a topic. Transactional queries indicate that the user intends to complete an action or purchase. Finally, local searches look for information tied to a specific area. If you want your SEO to be effective, understanding these query types is crucial.

In the last decade and a half, the shift to mobile has reshaped the search landscape. Over 60 percent of web traffic in the US, and nearly 70 percent globally, comes from mobile devices today. This transition has prompted Google to adopt mobile-first indexing, which prioritizes the mobile version of websites for ranking. Mobile optimization has therefore become a critical factor in SEO.

Search engine result pages (or SERPs) have themselves changed. Gone are the days of a simple list of links. SERPs now include featured snippets, knowledge panels, local packs, and more – elements that significantly affect user behavior and click-through rates. Therefore, understanding SERP layouts is now an essential part of SEO strategy.

And last but not least, artificial intelligence is revolutionizing search. Machine learning algorithms like RankBrain and BERT enhance Google’s ability to understand complex queries. Meanwhile, generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Bard are emerging as potential aids to content creation, albeit with limitations and accuracy concerns. As we’ll see, applying these tools to SEO requires careful consideration, balancing the potential benefits against the risks.
