Essence survives identity
One morning, Marisa stood at the stove and burned the bacon. Again. She used to cook without thinking, rattling off complex tasks while her mind ran laps around other problems. Now, with long COVID clouding her brain, she couldn't manage a frying pan.
For someone whose brain had sailed her through Harvard, a career in finance, and a White House appointment, this was more than an inconvenience. It felt like an erasure of self.
But there's a distinction that ultimately safeguarded who she really is: identity is not the same as essence. Your identity – the roles you play, the skills you deploy, the way the world recognizes you – can absolutely be disrupted by illness, grief, or crisis. But your essence is something different. It's the core of who you are; it’s the things people would say about you at your funeral. It’s the values and qualities so fundamental that they don't bend to circumstance.
For Marisa, accepting that distinction meant recognizing that, yes, she could no longer be the tireless multi-tasker she once was. But she was still her mother's daughter. And she was still someone who fiercely protected the people she loved, even from a sickbed. That hadn't changed, and it never would.
When uncertainty threatens who you are, go looking for what can't be taken. If your essence is hopefulness, you're going to need it more than ever – so guard it. If you default to love in times of uncertainty, keep loving, even when the expression of that love has to look different from what it used to.
Marisa's life required a complete restructuring of how she operated day-to-day. But who she really was remained intact. And that, it turns out, is enough to build from. She’s not herself in the traditional sense, but her essence is still the same. That has to be OK for her for now. And the same goes for you.

What is Waiting for Dawn about?
Waiting for Dawn (2026) is a personal and research-grounded guide to navigating uncertainty, loss, and pain with grace and compassion. Drawing on a particularly brutal two-year stretch that included the loss of a family member, a cousin's murder, and a battle with long COVID, the book explores how to stay committed to hope even when daily pain makes that feel impossible. It makes the case that self-compassion and self-preservation are the real tools for moving from a place of instability toward healing.
Who should read Waiting for Dawn?
- Anyone going through a hard, uncertain season of life
- People who feel isolated but can't quite explain why
- Caregivers who keep putting themselves last
