You are more than your roles, and your body carries the experience
Who are you, really? It’s a deceptively simple question. Take away your job, your relationships, your possessions, and all the labels you use to describe yourself. What remains?
At the deepest level, your identity reaches beyond the roles you happen to occupy. Wise believes that from a spiritual perspective, you are a soul having a human experience, connected to something larger than yourself. That deeper identity gives life a sense of meaning and connection, while your physical body is the way you actually experience and express that inner life in the world. The two are part of the same human experience, so understanding yourself means paying attention to both.
That’s because spiritual awareness still has to be lived through a body. Your body is the vessel that lets you move, communicate, work, connect with others, and experience the world around you. And for all its complexity, it depends on basic forms of care. It needs oxygen and water. It needs nourishing food, enough sleep, regular movement, sunlight, and physical safety. When those needs are neglected, the effects can show up in your energy, mood, physical recovery, and the body’s ability to maintain balance.
Your body constantly responds to what you give it. Food and air become part of its physical environment, while medication, chemicals, and other daily inputs can influence how it functions. That makes awareness an important part of physical care. Rather than taking your body for granted, notice what helps it function well and what leaves it struggling.
Caring for your spiritual life doesn’t mean looking beyond the physical world while neglecting the body carrying you through it. And caring for your body isn’t separate from a meaningful life. Both belong to the same experience.
Once you’ve looked at the spiritual and physical sides of experience, the next questions are: How does your mind interpret what happens to you? And, how do emotions turn those interpretations into felt experience?
