You need a reset
Men and boys today are adrift – adrift in a sea of pornography.
Porn is nothing new. But both its reach and nature have changed dramatically. In the past, people had to put in a lot of effort to find pornography. And if they succeeded, what they found would be, by today’s distorted standards, comparatively mild.
Things have changed. Porn producers have now established massive digital empires that aggressively expand their reach. Teenage boys and even preteens, whose sexuality is just coming into being, are readily able to access hard-core pornography with just a few clicks online.
This radical change brings many dangers. Porn reshapes the perceptions of sex, manhood, and womanhood. It tears intimacy from the act of sex, making it about personal gratification and conquest. It takes an emotional toll, separating men and women from each other – and from God.
In one generation, norms have dramatically shifted under porn's influence. Acts once considered taboo are now mainstream and routine. What was once forbidden is now boring. Men and women alike may now face the expectation that they will “act like a porn star” rather than expressing true intimacy.
Despite their faith, Christians haven’t been spared these upheavals. For many Christian men, believing that porn is wrong doesn’t stop them from indulging in it. But know that whatever fleeting enjoyment porn can bring, its costs are so much greater.
Pornography mocks God's design for intimate marital relations. It promotes destructive falsehoods about sexuality that can’t be integrated into a godly life. It mocks and inverts the divine purpose of sex. It depicts intimacy as a violent conquest of others rather than mutual love and care.
The desire for porn, like all sin, never fulfills or satisfies – so it’s never enough. It’s an addiction that inherently progresses to more and more extremity. What once intrigued becomes mundane. What once was disgusting becomes desirable. Porn escalates, and in doing so, it reshapes minds and hearts.
If you’re feeling afflicted by porn, what you need is a reset. A chance to embrace a new view of sexuality – to go from merely admitting porn is wrong to deeply, spiritually rejecting its corrupting effects. Temptation itself will always remain, so the goal of your reset should be to get back to a place where porn had little hold.
Throughout your journey, it’s important to keep your expectations realistic. Perfection is impossible, and we all stumble on the way to progress. But if you’re diligent, you can gain a foothold. And through God's abundant grace, you’ll find real change.
