The Legend of the Monk and the Merchant summary

Three years later, Antonio returns for his second meeting with Alessio. During his journey, he thinks about how his life has changed thanks to acting on the first principle of hard work. On his last visit, he’d pulled into the harbor in an old, leaky boat. This time, he’s sailing in on a brand-new one – purchased with his wealth from the trade beads.

When Antonio docks, his cherished mentor is nowhere to be found. Instead, a handwritten note directs him to be at the church for midnight mass. Antonio is glad to be reunited with Alessio, but is troubled by the priest’s words against the wealthy. Alessio reassures him that God judges each heart individually. 

By now, Antonio is well-established with his bead business and happily married to Maria. However, this all changes one fateful night when his bead factory catches fire and burns to ashes. Antonio is devastated, feeling he has failed Maria and his business partner, Milos. 

Ever the mentor, Alessio comes to visit Antonio and shares three more principles with him. 

After rebuilding his bead factory and expanding the business into China and Spain, Antonio is confronted by the notorious merchant Ahmad in Morocco. Antonio anxiously consults Alessio on whether to meet him. 

Here, Alessio introduces Antonio to the seventh principle: reserve meekness when facing God, but be bold with men. 

Antonio recounts how his next challenge hits closer to home when his brother-in-law, Venny, asks him for a loan. Venny has been struggling financially with his new restaurant – and knows how wealthy his sister and Antonio have become. 

Antonio hesitates, and decides to seek Alessio’s counsel first. Alessio advises against the loan, warning it could damage their relationship and further exacerbate Venny’s poor money management.

Before their last meeting, Antonio receives a mysterious letter from Alessio requesting they rendezvous in Rome instead of Venice. Puzzled, Antonio recalls traveling to find the original St. Peter’s Basilica in ruins; it was demolished to make way for a grander, new cathedral. 

When a frail Alessio appears, it’s clear he’s nearing the end of his life. He shares that he’s been financing the new St. Peter’s Cathedral over the course of 18 years, and charges Antonio with carrying on this work by partnering with the clergy.
