Be a People Person summary

Confidence can be likened to an invisible current capable of shifting the dynamic of any interaction. As stated in Hebrews 10:35, “Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward,” authentic self-assurance, when well-founded, can have remarkable influence. 

It’s worth highlighting that humans are rarely able to achieve outcomes that surpass their view of what they believe to be possible for themselves. That is, if you don’t believe yourself to be capable and competent, you’ll likely fail to get the results a capable and competent person would. Consequently, confidence is a quality that needs continual maintenance; it doesn’t just appear from the ether and then remain constant for the rest of eternity. 

Trust is the bedrock of effective leadership. Without it, even the most compelling vision will lack a robust foundation. 

Being a leader – whether in the home, community, or workplace – means being held to a higher ethical standard than expected of those who follow. When a guide loses their footing, their fall can subsequently displace everyone within reach. As Jesus reminds us in Luke 12:48, “From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more.”

Can you recall someone giving you uplifting words or extending a generous gesture in a time of need? Although these moments can seem small on the surface, their impact can be profound and lasting.

Encouragement is both an art and a science. It requires an ability to genuinely empathize with others and a skillful understanding of what propels people forward. Strike this balance right, and you rise to the echelons of a people person who is able to help others transcend their own perceived limits.

Stepping into a leadership role – or simply choosing to stand out from the crowd – often puts a target on your back. While the apostle Paul advised, “If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men” in Romans 12:18, this can be easier said than done when others are shooting arrows your way! Yet, the unfortunate reality is that the more you set yourself apart, the more likely negativity will be lobbed toward you.

In these instances, it can help to remember that criticism often reveals more about the critic than about you. People tend to judge others through the lens of their own insecurities, so unnecessarily harsh remarks are rarely a reliable measure of your true character. Taking those comments personally can be counterproductive – you will never be able to fully control how others perceive you. What you can control is your response. Showing grace under pressure not only demonstrates resilience, but will also garner greater respect from those who matter. 

Ultimately, as social creatures, our happiness and success directly depend on our ability to connect with, relate to, and lead others. Seeing the people around you as partners in progress rather than obstacles and adversaries is a productive place to start. It can be easy to assume that getting everyone to act or think exactly the same is the ultimate goal, but uniformity doesn’t guarantee harmony. The real metric of import is unity – a shared sense of purpose that drives every member to contribute enthusiastically and creatively.
