Juicing in a Nutshell: Fundamental Principles

Just like any other lifestyle change, getting into juicing can seem overwhelming at first. The truth is, it’s not that hard to work it into your diet.

Before you start bringing out your fruits and greens, though, let's dive into the juicy nitty gritty. Juicing is simply the extraction of juice from fruits and vegetables using either a citrus press or an electric juicer. The process involves separating the juice from the pulp, skin, seeds, and rough plant fibers to give you an elixir packed with vitamins and nutrients.

What makes juicing an easy weight-loss method to get into is the fact that you don’t need much knowledge of it to start, nor do you have to follow strict meal plans and consult fitness gurus. There's no such thing as making and consuming the wrong juice. You’re free to get creative, have fun, and let your inner mixologist shine.

While it is true that the juicing process removes a substantial amount of fiber from the produce, it still offers a bounty of advantages compared to consuming raw fruits and vegetables. For one, it uses up produce that would otherwise go bad, saving you money in the process. If you aren’t a big fan of fruits and greens, juicing can help you incorporate them into your daily meals. In addition, this method is perfect for busy people who need to prep meals fast and take them on the go.

The easiest way to make your own juice is with an electric juicer. Before shopping for one, you need to identify the best type of juicer for your needs. The simplest is the centrifugal juicer, which is also the cheapest, but it’s not recommended for juicing very hard produce and fruits with pits. Another option is the masticating juicer, which runs at a slower speed and makes juices that can last longer. Finally, you have the triturating juicer – the most expensive among the three, but also the most efficient to use.

Now that you have your juicer, you can start making your own juice from scratch. It’s a relatively straightforward process that starts with thoroughly washing your produce of choice. Then, set your juicer to the recommended speed before feeding the fruit or veggie through. Different produce requires different speeds, so make sure to check the manufacturer's instructions. Once you have juiced all your ingredients, see if there are chunks or pulp left in the receptacle. Put them back into the machine to get more juice. After everything is said and done, consume your drink right away, or store it in an airtight glass container for no longer than 48 hours.
