What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a timeless science, religion, and philosophy all woven into one. An ancient Indian discipline, its name stems from Sanskrit and means “science of life.”

Together with Yoga and Tantra, Ayurveda forms the triad of ancient Indian life-disciplines. Yoga is the pursuit of union with the Divine. Tantra is a method of controlling energy for union with the Truth. And Ayurveda is the science of life. Together, they promote human happiness, health, and creative growth. Ayurveda forms the foundation upon which Yoga and Tantra stand. So it’s crucial to comprehend it in order to practice the other two disciplines effectively.

Of course, fully understanding Ayurveda requires a lot of study. But you can still internalize a few of the basics right now.

For one, Ayurveda sees cosmic energy coursing through all living and nonliving things. This energy stems from cosmic consciousness and manifests as male and female energy. Prakruti, the female energy, creates all forms. Purusha, the male energy, passively witnesses creation. Ayurveda teaches us how these energies are interwoven into our lives.

Ayurveda also sees every human as a microcosm, a small universe unto itself, intimately connected with the greater cosmic manifestation. By studying the teachings of Ayurveda, self-healing becomes possible for anyone. It emphasizes our individual capacity to counteract physical deterioration and disease.

Ayurvedic teachings may initially raise questions that seem unanswerable. This science encourages a holistic understanding. To grasp its wisdom completely, you must accept some statements at face value until you acquire a deeper understanding. Ayurveda invites you to cultivate an open mind and heart, embracing the journey of learning and growth as you uncover the timeless knowledge it offers.
