Pamela grew up in Ladysmith, a small town located on the eastern shore of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Her family first lived in one of nine small cabins her grandparents owned and rented, all clustered between the forest and shoreline. Her earliest memories are of playing on the beach and swimming in the crystal-clear waters of the ocean. The landscape was lush, beautiful, and home to a vast array of wildlife. This environment sparked a lifelong connection with the natural world and its inhabitants, which led her to become an advocate for animal rights and environmental issues. 

Looking to use her international Baywatch fame for good, in 1997 Pamela went big with her entry into animal activism. Her image loomed from a Times Square billboard urging people to “give fur the cold shoulder” on behalf of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). Since then, she has been a vocal advocate for animal welfare, and has used her platform to raise awareness about animal cruelty around the world. 

Despite an idyllic natural environment and the presence of nurturing grandparents, her parents’ volatile relationship and several traumatic events dramatically impacted Pamela’s childhood. She describes physical abuse by a babysitter when she was very young, followed by assault at age 12 by a friend’s acquaintance and further abuse as a teen. She describes how later posing nude for Playboy helped her reconnect with and reclaim power over her own body. Up until then, she internalized these experiences, not wanting to create more trouble in an already charged home life. 

While her parents were beautiful and charismatic, they fought wildly, creating a chaotic and sometimes dangerous environment for her and her younger brother. Pamela would hatch schemes to stop the fights, like hiding her brother in a barrel and reporting him missing to authorities. In those cases, she was willing to take the punishment for creating more drama, so long as it would protect them all.

Despite decades of scrutiny over her sex-symbol image, romantic partners, and sometimes scandalous life events, Pamela is straightforward about the influences and motivations behind them. It is easy to see the parallels between her father’s edgy charisma and daredevil ways and the “bad boy” romantic partners she was drawn to like a magnet. She also makes it clear that while she’s always sought to replicate her parents’ passion, she would not emulate or tolerate abuse, even if it meant losing the love of her life.

These themes play out vividly in her union with musician Tommy Lee, with whom she shares two sons. A few months after a chance meeting and night of partying at a nightclub Pamela co-owned, Tommy pursued her hard. He followed her to Cancún, where she was working. She agreed to meet up with him and his friends for her final night there. They enjoyed a night out with friends, during which she believes he spiked her drink, and within hours the two were engaged. The next day, they married on the beach before a handful of friends. By the time they arrived back in L.A., the news had traveled around the world, and the paparazzi was there to greet them. The camera flashes remained ever-present throughout the superstar couple’s time together. Despite them, the two strangers-turned-newlyweds seemed madly in love and determined to make it work.

Following her split from Tommy, Pamela established a quieter life for the boys on the beach in Malibu. There, the kids surfed before school in the mornings and she refocused on her health, self-care, and spending time with a growing circle of friends in arts, entertainment, and activism. She had a couple of high-profile romances, including marriages to musician Kid Rock and poker player Rick Salomon. 

Eventually, she sent her sons to a prestigious private high school she’d always admired on Vancouver Island. During that time, she traveled the world for work and spent a good amount of time in France and Monaco. She also decided that “home” would once again be Vancouver Island. She sold her beloved Malibu home and established a ranch on the water’s edge where her life had begun. It was there that she began more deeply revisiting her childhood and the experiences that shaped her life. 

Pamela Anderson’s story told in tabloids hasn’t done any justice for the life she’s actually led, which is one of love. She transmuted childhood trauma into a lifetime of compassion, using her unexpected fame to serve her family and causes close to her heart. Even so, she’s repeatedly passed on opportunities to gain more fame or money if it meant sacrificing her relationship with her children or their ability to thrive. She sees her multiple marriages as bravery, continuing to explore sharing love with another regardless of the risk that it won’t work.
