The Theory of Moral Sentiments, written by the Scottish economist and philosopher Adam Smith, is a profound exploration of the nature of morality and human relationships. Imagine that on your way to work, you see a stranger struggling to cross a busy street, looking worried, and glancing from side to side as cars rush past.
So, how do you react? You, standing at the opposite side, might feel a pang of worry in your heart. That feeling is empathy. You’re connected to that stranger through shared emotions. So, you may experience an impulse to help the stranger. You could find yourself entering the busy traffic, extending your arm, and escorting the stranger to a safe area. Alternatively, you might feel a contrary impulse – a desire to exit the scene as swiftly as you can. After all, you’ve got work to do.
