The cycle of violence that systemic poverty brings can be hard to break.

Darren McGarvey stands in front of a group of prisoners. The air is tense, his audience, all young incarcerated women, are apprehensive. He needs to break the ice and to earn their trust. So, he does what he always does: he raps.

In rhyming verse, he explains his rough upbringing. He references cheap alcohol and gray council flats. This is how McGarvey begins the songwriting workshops he teaches to prisoners all across Scotland. Over the next few weeks, he will hear his student’s stories, too. Inevitably, they will speak of poverty, drug addiction, and abuse. They will speak of lives that make crime hard to avoid.

The key message here is: The cycle of violence that systemic poverty brings can be hard to break.

McGarvey is able to connect with his students because his own life has been shaped by the dual forces of poverty and violence. He grew up in Pollok, a poor, working-class neighborhood on the southside of Glasgow. In the early nineties, when McGarvey was a child, this area often ranked as one of the most economically deprived places in Europe.

And growing up in Pollok meant that violence was all around. The rampant economic insecurity within the community drove many people toward crime and drug use. Kids, under constant stress from poor living conditions, often resorted to fighting as a coping mechanism. Winning fights provided an ego boost and ensured that other children would not bother you.

The violence of Pollok was a domestic issue as well. McGarvey’s mother was an alcoholic. Her drinking could sometimes make her fun and affectionate, but just as often it made her mean and erratic.

McGarvey recalls one particularly harrowing night when he was five – things really got out of control. After having too much to drink, she chased a terrified young McGarvey around the house with a knife. Luckily, there were others there to pull her away, before it was too late.

Living around all this violence is very disruptive for an individual, especially a young one. You begin to be always on alert, and your behavior becomes dictated by anxiety and fear. In order to survive, you have to adopt attitudes and behaviors you may not even like. For McGarvey, this meant hiding his interest in art and politics. After all, in his neighborhood, these interests were considered too pretentious.

Worst of all, after a while it all seems normal. It becomes hard to imagine a lifestyle where there isn’t always the imminent threat of violence. As we’ll see in the next blink, we’ll explore how this feeling is expressed in the world outside of Pollok.

Social inequalities are expressed in all aspects of British society.

One week, back in 2015, two news stories happened in Britain. In the first, a middle-class couple received a £60 fine for taking their children out of school to go on holiday to Florida. In the second story, the conservative government cut child care benefits for low-income families.

Your social relations have a huge impact on your life.

Picture this: Hundreds of people are gathered in a field. Some have tattoos and dyed hair, others are outfitted in traditional Celtic garb, others wear leather jackets adorned with anarchist symbols. Together they sing and chant and overturn old cars to use as barricades.

This is the Pollok Free State, a grassroots protest movement that galvanized the Pollok community throughout the nineties. The movement was originally formed to protest the construction of the M77 motorway. However, it inadvertently kicked off a surge of activism that brought different groups together across Glasgow.

Urban regeneration schemes don’t always help the working class.

What makes a neighborhood valuable? For McGarvey, it’s about a personal connection to the place. A neighborhood matters because it’s where your roots are. However, wealthy newcomers to a city may have different concerns. They may care less about a neighborhood’s history and care more about trendy cafés with names like Soy Division.

This tension is present in many gentrifying neighborhoods. It is definitely the case in Gorbals, a working-class neighborhood in Glasgow. This once-neglected area now receives lots of attention from developers, investors, and nonprofits. However, for many residents, this change is a mixed blessing.

Speaking out about poverty earned McGarvey both acclaim and scorn.

An alcoholic mother. A childhood of trauma. A burgeoning drug addiction. Homelessness. These were the facts of McGarvey’s life. As he got older, he had a choice to make: he could either try to hide from these realities, or, he could address them directly.

McGarvey decided to speak. He began rapping about his experiences and speaking openly about the difficulties of living down-and-out in Glasgow. And people listened. At least they listened sometimes.

To address social problems, we must actually listen to the working class.

They’re violent. They refuse to learn English. They should go back to their home countries. When McGarvey asked two troubled teens what they thought about immigrants, these were just a few of the ugly responses they gave.

Yes, the comments are racist. And yes, it’s disappointing to hear such xenophobic talk. But McGarvey knew he couldn’t just berate the teens with a lecture. That wouldn’t change their opinions at all. Instead, he put himself in their shoes. Where did they learn these ideas? Why did they feel true to them?

In order to get sober, McGarvey had to reevaluate his entire identity.

Pop a couple “jellies” – that’s the street term for opium-based sedatives – and your whole outlook will improve. You’ll feel relaxed, stress-free, and in control of your thoughts. Life will seem great.

Don’t be fooled, though. In reality, things will be much different. In reality, you’ll be stumbling in the street, sleeping in trash, and stealing from your friends. You’ll be a junkie.

Anger and resentment will not improve the world around you.

In 2016, Ellie Harrison, a successful artist and professor, received a hefty grant. She was given £15,000 for something called the Glasgow Project. To complete this “action research project” Harrison would live in Glasgow for one year. The project was supposed to highlight the challenges of living sustainably in a troubled city.

To McGarvey, this was a joke and an insult. Why pay a middle-class artist to pretend to be a poor person stuck in Glasgow? There are actual poor people who are stuck in Glasgow. So, McGarvey penned an op-ed about it. He wrote that the artist was just taking a “poverty safari.”
