The Beginning of a Journey

Our journey in Gossamer by Lois Lowry begins with a small creature named Littlest One, who is learning her assignment as a dream-giver. She is a tiny, fairy-like being, and her mentor is the elderly and wise Thin Elderly. Together, they visit a home where an elderly woman lives. Littlest One learns to gather the positive memories and experiences from the objects in the house, which she then weaves into beautiful dreams for the woman.

At the same time, we are introduced to John, a young boy living in a foster home. John has had a tough life and is filled with anger and fear. He often wakes up screaming from terrible nightmares, which are caused by the sinister creatures known as Sinisteeds. These creatures feed off the fear and negativity of humans, resulting in the nightmares they create.

As the story progresses, we see the connection between Littlest One's world and John's. Littlest One and Thin Elderly observe John's life and the impact of his traumatic experiences on his dreams. Littlest One is determined to help John, but Thin Elderly warns her not to interfere directly with the human world.

She enters the world of the Sinisteeds, where she discovers their own tragic past, which led them to become the dark creatures they are. Littlest One's empathy extends even to these sinister beings, and she manages to change the Sinisteeds' nightmares into pleasant dreams.

Back in the human world, John begins to heal. His nightmares lessen, and he starts to open up to his foster mother. He even starts to form a connection with Littlest One, feeling her presence in his dreams. The story ends with a sense of hope, as John and Littlest One both embark on a journey of healing and recovery.
