Overcoming adversity

Halloween was always the author’s favorite holiday. So it was especially painful when, as a nine-year-old, he got overexcited and broke the femur in his left leg. Given his condition, as a person with osteogenesis imperfecta, or “brittle bones disorder,” broken bones weren’t an uncommon occurrence during childhood. But since it meant that he wouldn’t be able to go trick or treating, he was in both physical and mental agony.

But then his mom asked a question: “Is this going to be a gift, or a burden?” It made him understand that he could look at the painful moments in his life in one of two ways. He could either see them as a punishment and feel sorry for himself, or he could see them as a chance to learn, grow, and become stronger. From then on, he would always choose the latter.

Meditation, visualization, and mind-body healing techniques became his allies. He also learned that life was easier when he could communicate his requests clearly and confidently. This skill served him well as he grew up. He ascended to the position of governor at Boys State, an elite program attended by the best and brightest young men in the country.

He then found a role in the White House during the Bill Clinton administration. He thrived in the fast-paced environment, demonstrating resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity. But it was motivational speaking that truly captured his heart. Interacting with audiences, he recognized the need for deeper change. Inspirational stories and quotes were insufficient; he yearned to help people find inner peace amid life's chaos.

Through extensive travels and encounters with thousands of individuals, he made a profound observation: people's biggest obstacle in life was the size of their "BUT." This BUT served as a cushioned excuse, a reason to avoid change, to remain in a state of unhappiness. He became a therapist and opened a practice.

In the sections ahead, we’ll learn the six biggest lessons that can help anyone overcome their fears and leave their BUTs behind.
