    Tocqueville’s culture shock

A French aristocrat walks into a democracy...

When Alexis de Tocqueville visited America in 1831, he was astonished. As a young French diplomat from an elite family, he expected to find a backwards, uncivilized nation. Instead, he saw a thriving, relatively equal society.

Coming from a rigid European class system, what struck Tocqueville most was America's equality of conditions. Citizens related to each other as equals, without the ingrained hierarchies of aristocratic Europe.

To Tocqueville, America’s equality was no accident – it reflected an irresistible democratic revolution sweeping the Western world. Over centuries, aristocratic privileges had slowly eroded as commerce and education created new paths to influence.

Tocqueville believed this revolution was inevitable. He was captivated by an optimistic vision of liberty, equality, and prosperity. But he knew all too well that new republics often slid into despotism. He was equally concerned about the hazards of a budding democracy, like the tyranny of the majority.

So, Tocqueville decided to examine American democracy in depth. He attended town meetings, elections, and court trials. He observed how democratic ideals were put into practice – and where they met their limits. He also noted how the peculiar character of the American citizens contributed to the shape of the new nation.

With a mixture of admiration and anxiety, Tocqueville recorded democracy’s paradoxes and possibilities. And although almost two centuries have passed since then, Tocqueville’s insights remain touchstones in the world’s ongoing mission for equality.
