Answering the Call to Serve on America’s Homefront
Behind the Badge delves into the personal and professional journeys of law enforcement officers. Johnny Joey Jones uncovers the humanity behind the uniform, revealing the emotional and ethical challenges faced while serving and protecting.
Clay Hendricks always believed he was ready for anything – until he wasn’t. He’s spent 23 years working as a firefighter. But an early, difficult call shaped the course of his career in ways he never expected.
The son of a mechanic from a long line of mechanics, Clay had broken from family tradition when he joined the fire service. He’d been drawn by a desire to help people. He was motivated, gung-ho, and wanted to get into the thick of things.
His confidence was shattered during what should have been a routine call. Clay and his crew arrived at the scene to find a child who’d been run over by a truck. The intensity of the family’s anguish was overwhelming, and something broke inside Clay. He told his company officer he was losing it and even offered to resign on the spot. His officer, recognizing the moment for what it was, sent him back to the station to calm down.
At the firehouse, Clay called his wife. He didn’t explain – he just needed to hear his children’s voices to make sure they were okay. Then he walked to the fire truck and wept. Something had ruptured inside him that would resonate throughout the rest of his career. The certainty he’d carried was gone, replaced by something more fragile and honest.
Before he could fully process what had happened, another call came in. He felt panicked, but this time he was able to help. This successful response steadied him, reminding him why he did this work.
It’s a tension that has marked his entire career since – on one hand, seeing what he’s seen has hurt him terribly. On the other, he feels tremendous pride in helping people in tough situations. The trauma builds up. He has nightmares, insomnia. He’s sought therapy, takes medication, and has been open with his peers about his struggles with anxiety and intrusive thoughts.
Now, as an instructor training new recruits, Clay always delivers the same message: no matter how tough they think they are, they’re vulnerable to trauma. One day they’ll need help – and when that day comes, they’d better seek it.
Behind The Badge (2025) explores the motivations and experiences of first responders through personal stories gathered by a retired Marine. Featuring profiles of various frontline defenders – including game wardens, firefighters, police officers, and SWAT team members – who risk their lives to protect others, it reveals the human side of these everyday heroes.
It's highly addictive to get core insights on personally relevant topics without repetition or triviality. Added to that the apps ability to suggest kindred interests opens up a foundation of knowledge.
Great app. Good selection of book summaries you can read or listen to while commuting. Instead of scrolling through your social media news feed, this is a much better way to spend your spare time in my opinion.
Life changing. The concept of being able to grasp a book's main point in such a short time truly opens multiple opportunities to grow every area of your life at a faster rate.
Great app. Addicting. Perfect for wait times, morning coffee, evening before bed. Extremely well written, thorough, easy to use.
