Don Knotts, the legendary actor was best known for his hilarious adventures playing Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show. However, Don Knotts’ love life was as extensive as his career, marrying three times in his lifetime.
Despite his last and prominent union with Frances Yarborough, the noteworthy actor had been wed to Kathryn Metz and Loralee Czuchna before her. This article tells the story of the celebrated comedian’s multiple marriages.
Don Knotts’ first wife was his college girlfriend Kathryn Metz. Metz, an influential woman, was the daughter of a Baptist minister residing in the northern stretches of Wheeling, West Virginia.
After two years of courtship, they tied the knot in 1947 within the sanctity of Metz’s father’s church. Their union gifted them two children, Thomas and Karen. They divorced in 1964.
Ten years after divorcing Metz, Don Knotts found new love with Loralee Czuchna in 1974. Throughout their years together, rumors circulated suggesting that Knotts’ declining mental health posed challenges to their relationship.
As reported by Wide Open Country, his rising battle with depression allegedly created a rift between the couple.
Karen, Knotts’ daughter, has previously opened up about her father’s mental health predicaments. She revealed to Closer Weekly, “His disposition was volatile. He was seen by many different moods.
He wrestled fiercely with depression, and in my perception, my assistance was beneficial to him. I could discern how he would spiral down an unending trail of negative thoughts.” Ultimately, their marriage ended in 1983.
Fast forward almost two decades and Knotts walked down the aisle for the third and last time, this time with actress Frances Yarborough, known for her work in The Electric Chair. The couple, who wed in 2002, initially connected in the ’80s during their collaboration on the sitcom “What a Country!”
They remained married until Knott died in 2006. Upon Knotts’ passing, Yarborough inherited his multi-million dollar estate.
Reflecting on her husband’s demise, she shared, “He had an exceptional ability to capture the poignant aspects of people’s joy and suffering, turning them into something utterly heartwarming and hilariously entertaining.“
From his first marriage to Kay Metz, Don Knotts’s family primarily comprised his two children, Karen and Thomas. Karen became an actress like her father, while Thomas chose to live a life away from the limelight.
Regarding his relationship with his children, particularly his daughter, Don was known for being a supportive and encouraging father.
Often laughed at their on-screen rapport, but did Andy Griffith like Don Knotts in real life? The pair was not just famous for their comical on-screen chemistry as Andy Griffith and Barney Fife but also off-screen.
Their partnership extended beyond their widely popular show and they remained friends until Knotts’ passing.
While Hollywood icons like Don Knotts and Andy Griffith often seem larger than life, knowing about their personal lives, particularly about Don Knotts’ wife and Andy Griffith’s family, brings a relatable, human touch to their personas.
