Early Life and Visions

In Illuminations by Mary Sharratt, we are introduced to Hildegard of Bingen as a young girl, growing up in a medieval German monastery. Despite being given this papal approval, Hildegard faces opposition from the male clergy and even from within her community. Her visions and teachings are considered heretical, and she is accused of being possessed by the devil. However, Hildegard's strength and conviction in her beliefs never waver. She continues to write and share her wisdom, eventually gaining respect and recognition for her contributions to theology, medicine, and natural history.

Artistic and Scientific Contributions

In Illuminations, Sharratt also explores Hildegard's artistic and scientific pursuits. Hildegard was a talented musician and composer, and she wrote many beautiful hymns and liturgical songs. She was also a skilled herbalist and healer, and she wrote several books on medicine and natural history.

Hildegard's scientific works were often based on her visions, and she believed that the natural world was a reflection of the divine. She saw the interconnectedness of all living things and was one of the first people to consider the idea of the "web of life."
