The Beginning: A Horrifying Happening

In the graphic novel Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, the narrative initiates with a shocking incident. Former superhero Edward Morgan Blake, also known as The Comedian, plummets to his death from a skyscraper. This uncovers a dreadful reality to the readers - the world of superheroes is not as glamorous and invincible as conceived. These protagonists too are vulnerable to death and humanly fallacies.

Juspeczyk and Dreiberg, coming out of retirement, rescue Rorschach from prison to uncover the truth together. The 'who watches the watchmen?' dilemma finds resonance among themselves when they uncover a brutal truth that one of their own kind is the orchestrator of these crimes.

At the heart of Watchmen we find Ozymandias, who in an attempt to unify the world and ultimately save it, engineers a catastrophic event leading to mass deaths. His belief that a common enemy unifies a divided population makes readers question the black and white morality they usually associate with superheroes.

The End: The Morality Question

Moore's graphic novel Watchmen concludes on a note of moral ambiguity, subtly questioning the means to an end. Dr. Manhattan, Dreiberg, Juspeczyk and Rorschach grapple with Veidt's actions. A shocking cache of Rorschach's journal in the mail room of a local newspaper company implies that the world might yet discover the truth, rendering the conclusion of Watchman a suggestive cliffhanger.
