On the other side of the continent, in Los Angeles, we meet the Jewish Silvers family. They face the horrors of Nazi occupation, including the establishment of concentration camps for the city's Jewish population. The family members take different paths in response to their dire circumstances, with some joining the resistance and others collaborating with the occupiers in a bid to survive.

The Global Stage

While the majority of the novel is set in North America, Turtledove also explores the global impact of the Axis victory. We witness the Japanese occupation of Hawaii and the Philippines, the British Empire's struggles to maintain control of its colonies, and the growing tension between Nazi Germany and its erstwhile ally, the Confederate States.

As the war continues, the Axis powers find themselves facing unexpected challenges. The Soviet Union, despite its initial alliance with Germany, begins to resist the German occupation, and the Japanese find themselves embroiled in a protracted and bloody conflict in China.
