The End of a Legend

However, Books' peaceful days are numbered. A group of people, including a gambler, a doctor, and a journalist, start circling around him, hoping to profit from his impending death. Books is aware of their intentions but chooses to face his end with dignity.

The Final Showdown

As Books' health continues to decline, he knows that his time is running out. He makes a final decision to face his end on his own terms. He arranges a shootout with three gunmen, including the young man who had previously confronted him. The duel is set for his own funeral day, in a place of his choosing, so that he can die as he lived – a gunfighter.

In the climactic showdown, Books kills his opponents but not without sustaining fatal injuries himself. He returns to the boarding house to spend his final moments with Mrs. Rogers and Gillom. As he lies dying, he asks Gillom to shoot him before the cancer takes its toll, sparing him a painful death. Gillom, however, cannot bring himself to do it, and Books passes away naturally.
