As Tristran and Yvaine draw closer to Wall, they grow closer to each other. Tristran learns that he is not entirely human, but rather a half-faerie, which explains his ability to cross the wall. Back in Stormhold, the power struggle among the king's sons leads to treachery, murder, and unexpected alliances. The Ultimate Sacrifice and a New Beginning

As the story reaches its climax, Tristran and Yvaine return to Wall, where Tristran fulfills his promise to Victoria by presenting her with the fallen star. However, he soon realizes that his heart belongs to Yvaine, and not Victoria. In a dramatic turn of events, Tristran sacrifices his heart to save Yvaine, who transforms into a human woman, no longer a fallen star.
