Discovering the Truth

In June Bug by Chris Fabry, we are introduced to June Bug, a young girl who has spent her entire life on the road with her father, John. However, everything changes when June Bug sees her picture on a missing child poster in a Walmart.

Shocked and confused, June Bug confronts her father, who reluctantly reveals that her mother, who she believed to be dead, is alive and that he kidnapped her when she was merely a toddler. Her real name is Mumsie and she was taken from her mother, who is now a famous actress named Claire. John explains that he took June Bug away from her mother to protect her from the dangers of her world. Devastated by this revelation, June Bug feels a mix of emotions – anger, confusion, and betrayal.

The Journey Begins

Despite her father's pleas, June Bug decides to find her mother and learn the truth about her past. She takes off alone, leaving her father behind. Her journey leads her to Dogwood, West Virginia, her mother's hometown. Here, she discovers that her mother's career was built on the story of her missing daughter. Claire has never stopped looking for her, and her life has been consumed by the loss of her only child.

June Bug, now using her real name, meets her grandmother, who welcomes her with open arms. She also befriends a boy named Ziggy, who helps her navigate the unfamiliar town and its people. As she spends time in Dogwood, June Bug begins to understand the life she could have had if she hadn't been taken away. She also witnesses the impact her disappearance had on those she left behind.

Confronting the Truth

June Bug decides to reveal her true identity to her mother, who is initially in disbelief. She struggles to accept the fact that her daughter, who she thought was dead, is standing in front of her. Claire's fame has isolated her, and the revelation of her daughter's return brings both joy and chaos to her life.

June Bug's reunion with her mother is bittersweet, as she realizes that the woman she once idolized is a stranger to her. Their relationship is strained, and June Bug grapples with the conflicting emotions of love and resentment. She also has to come to terms with the fact that her father, whom she still cares for, is facing legal consequences for kidnapping her.

Acceptance and Forgiveness
