The Journey Begins

Our journey begins with the author, Edmund Hillary, and his expedition team making their way to Everest in 1953. The Ascent

Despite these challenges, they manage to establish Camp IX at 27,900 feet, just below the South Summit.

It is from this camp that Hillary and Tenzing Norgay make their final push for the summit. Reaching the Summit

After reaching the summit, Hillary and Tenzing spend only 15 minutes at the top before beginning their descent. Despite these setbacks, they manage to make it back to Camp IX, where they are greeted as heroes by their waiting team members.

After a brief rest, the team begins their descent down the mountain, a journey that is almost as dangerous as the climb itself. They encounter a severe storm on the way down, which tests their endurance to the limit. However, they manage to make it back to base camp safely, having achieved what was once thought impossible.

The Aftermath

In the final part of the book, Hillary reflects on the impact of their achievement. He describes the worldwide acclaim they received and the effect it had on the Sherpa people, who played a crucial role in the expedition. He also discusses the controversy surrounding the climb, particularly the question of who reached the summit first, himself or Tenzing Norgay.

Despite these controversies, Hillary remains humble about his achievement, acknowledging the role of luck and the support of his team in their success. He ends the book by paying tribute to the mountain itself, acknowledging its power and majesty, and the part it played in shaping his life.
