The Early Life of Cleopatra

In Cleopatra by Stacy Schiff, we are introduced to the enigmatic queen of Egypt. Cleopatra, born in 69 BC, was a member of the Ptolemaic dynasty, a Greek family that ruled Egypt after the death of Alexander the Great. Schiff paints a vivid picture of Cleopatra's early life, describing her as a highly intelligent and well-educated woman who was fluent in multiple languages, including Egyptian, Greek, and Latin.

Despite her impressive intellect, Cleopatra's early reign was marked by political turmoil. She ascended to the throne at the age of 18, alongside her younger brother, Ptolemy XIII. However, their relationship quickly soured, leading to a civil war. Cleopatra was forced to flee Egypt, but she was determined to regain her power and sought help from the most powerful man in the world at the time, Julius Caesar.

The Alliance with Julius Caesar

After a daring journey, Cleopatra managed to meet Julius Caesar in 48 BC. Schiff describes their first encounter as a carefully orchestrated spectacle, with Cleopatra arriving in a grand procession, rolled up in a carpet, to be presented to Caesar. This bold move captured Caesar's attention, and the two soon became lovers. With Caesar's support, Cleopatra regained her throne, and the couple had a son, Caesarion, whom they claimed was Caesar's heir.

However, their happiness was short-lived. In 44 BC, Julius Caesar was assassinated, plunging Rome into chaos. Cleopatra, now a single mother and a queen, had to navigate the treacherous political landscape to secure her position and protect her son's claim to the throne.

The Romance with Mark Antony

In the aftermath of Caesar's death, a power struggle erupted in Rome. Cleopatra saw an opportunity to secure her position by forming an alliance with one of Caesar's most trusted generals, Mark Antony. Their relationship was passionate and tumultuous, and together they had three children. However, their union was met with disapproval in Rome, where Antony was seen as being under Cleopatra's spell, neglecting his duties to the empire.

Antony's relationship with Cleopatra, combined with his political decisions, led to a bitter rivalry with Octavian, Caesar's adopted son and the future Emperor Augustus. The conflict culminated in the famous Battle of Actium in 31 BC, where Octavian's forces defeated Antony and Cleopatra's fleet. Realizing their cause was lost, the couple fled back to Egypt.

The Tragic End of Cleopatra

In the final chapters of Cleopatra, Schiff describes the tragic end of the queen's life. Facing capture and humiliation in Rome, Cleopatra and Antony chose to die on their own terms. Antony committed suicide after receiving false news of Cleopatra's death, and Cleopatra, in turn, ended her life through the bite of an asp, a venomous snake.

With Cleopatra's death, Egypt became a Roman province, and her children were taken to Rome as captives. However, Cleopatra's legacy endured. She was remembered as a brilliant and charismatic ruler, who fought fiercely for her country's independence. Her story has inspired countless works of art, literature, and film, cementing her status as one of history's most fascinating and enduring figures.
