Who Is Tara Westover, Bestselling Author

Tara Westover, born on September 27, 1986, is an American memoirist and author who gained immense recognition for her debut book, “Educated.”  Born in a small town in Idaho, Westover was the youngest of seven children. Raised by survivalist parents who adhered to the Mormon faith, she had five older brothers and an older sister.

Suspecting the motives of doctors, hospitals, public schools, and governmental institutions, her parents chose not to involve themselves with them. As a result, Westover was born at home, with the assistance of a midwife, and never received medical attention from a doctor or nurse.

In fact, it wasn’t until she turned nine years old that she was finally registered for a birth certificate. Their father had a firm resistance towards seeking formal medical care for any member of the family.

Tara Westover’s Family and Education: From Mormon Homeschooling to Cambridge PhD

Under the loose guidance of their mother, all the siblings received an informal homeschooling education. Westover strongly desired to step out of her sheltered world and pursue a college education as she grew into adolescence.

Determined to make this dream a reality, she independently purchased textbooks and diligently studied in preparation for the ACT Exam. Her hard work paid off when she gained admission to Brigham Young University and received a scholarship despite not having a high school diploma.

At 17, in 2004, Westover took the brave step of moving into an apartment off-campus and attending classes. She financed her education by utilizing the money she had earned from working various jobs such as bookkeeping and being a grocery clerk.

During this time, her history professor became a significant mentor in her life and encouraged her to apply for a study-abroad program at Cambridge University in England. Despite not being aware of Cambridge before this, Westover managed to secure a place in the program.

By 2014, she had achieved her doctorate in history and developed close relationships with three of her brothers, particularly Tyler, who had also pursued higher education. Additionally, she had managed to reconnect with aunts and cousins who had also experienced estrangement due to her parent’s beliefs.

However, Westover decided to maintain a distant but reconciled relationship with the rest of her family, a choice that was accompanied by deep internal conflict.
