Chris Cornell, famed as the frontman of iconic bands such as Soundgarden and Audioslave, impressed audiences worldwide with his lyrics and unique vocal range. However, Cornell’s personal journey was as riveting as his musical career.

This article invites you on an explorative journey into the behind-the-scenes life of the music legend, especially focusing on the two women who became Chris Cornell’s wife.

Chris Cornell’s Two Marriages: Susan Silver and Vicky Karayiannis

Chris Cornell was married two times during his life.

In 1985, Cornell began a romantic relationship with Susan Silver (65), a manager known for her work with bands such as Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and Screaming Trees. Their relationship flourished and they eventually married in 1990.

The couple had a daughter, Lillian Jean, born on June 28, 2000. However, their union came to an end in 2004 when Cornell and Silver decided to divorce.

That same year, he met Vicky Karayiannis, a Paris-based American publicist. The couple’s romance began in the city of love – Paris – where they met.

Their initial meeting led to an enduring romance that resulted in a wedding in 2004. For 13 years, until Chris’ untimely death in 2017, they remained committed and steadfast life partners.

Chris Cornell’s Children

Besides being a rock icon, Chris was a devoted father. After having his son with Susan Silver, Michael; Chris had two children with Vicky: a daughter, Toni, and a son, Christopher Nicholas.

Despite the demanding nature of his career, Chris prided himself in being an engaged and active father.

A Tragic Death: Substance Abuse and Suicide

On May 18, 2017, Chris Cornell was in the midst of a tour with his band, Soundgarden. After performing an energetic show in Detroit, Michigan, he retired to his hotel room.

Tragically, he was found dead later that night, a death later ruled as a suicide.

It is known the hardship that the late Chris Cornell faced during his battle with depression and addiction. A brilliantly talented musician, Cornell’s struggle took a severe turn in 1997 when his band, Soundgarden, disbanded, and his marriage went through turbulent times.

As his challenges mounted, he fell heavily into the use of prescription medication and other substances. He eventually recognized his need for change and sought assistance from a rehabilitation center in 2002.

His lifestyle changes included quitting smoking and drinking by 2005, proving a testament to his strength to overcome.

Nevertheless, Cornell’s candidness about his struggles with addiction serves as a lasting beacon of hope. His story implicitly conveys to those tangled in similar situations that initiative for recovery must come from within.

His wife, Vicky,  left to grapple with the aftermath of his death, continues to raise awareness about the dangers of addiction, honoring her late husband’s struggle in the hope that it might help others.
